What is Clover?

Clover is a point of sale and payments platform that belongs to Fiserv. Merchants buy Clover devices with built-in software to take payments and run the business. In Canada, Clover devices work only with Fiserv processing. They cannot be moved to another processor.

Does it cost the merchantYes. A monthly software fee plus card processing on each sale, and hardware.

How it works

Clover is a system, not one device. You pick the devices and apps that fit how you sell. Clover Canada lists the Flex, Mini, Station Duo, Station Solo, Kitchen Display, Kiosk and Compact.

  • Each device comes with built-in software for payments, stock and staff scheduling.
  • Clover's App Market adds more, such as loyalty or accounting links.
  • Pay for hardware in full, or pay monthly with hardware and software in one price.
  • Clover says it offers support 24 hours a day, every day.

A Canadian example

Clover's pricing page shows how a rate is written. Its example is "1.0% + 10¢". It is a format example, not an offer. Take a $4.50 coffee on that format. The percentage is 4.5¢ and the fixed amount is 10¢, so the fee is 14.5¢. That is about 3.2% of the sale. Small tickets feel the fixed amount most. A $45 meal pays the same 10¢, which is far less of the bill. An example only, not a quote.

What is different in Canada and Québec

  • Clover Canada says devices can be bought or leased from other sellers. It adds that they cannot be used with other payment processors. Check who you are buying from.
  • Clover devices in Canada cannot take card payments offline. The Flex, Mini and Stations list LTE as a connection option.
  • Clover alone is not a certified sales recording system. Revenu Québec's list for restaurants has two systems built for Clover. They are Clover MEV Connect and Clover MEV Web. Check the current list before you buy.
  • Clover says its Gift Cards app is currently unavailable in French and in Quebec.
  • Clover Canada says contract terms and termination fees vary by service provider. That means Clover Direct or one of its partners.

What it costs and where it shows on your statement

Clover Canada does not publish a full price list for hardware, software and processing. A quote has five parts. They are hardware, a monthly software plan, card processing, apps and setup, plus the contract. Clover says the monthly software fee and the processing rates vary with your type of business. See how much Clover costs in Canada for each part and the questions to ask. Processing fees show on your Fiserv statement. Monthly software and any hardware payments may show there too, or on a separate bill.

Where CleverPays fits in this step

Clover is Fiserv's platform, and Fiserv is the processor behind it. CleverPays is a Certified Clover Dealer. CleverPays is operated by Groupe Heo Inc., an Agent of Fiserv Canada Ltd. We do not set interchange, network fees or card rules. We do not approve or decline cards.

We can recommend and set up Clover and other terminals or gateways. We can help Québec restaurants choose a certified system. We will walk you through a recent statement and show each fee line. We answer questions in English and French.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a Clover device from an outside seller to save money. Clover says it cannot be used with other processors.
  • Comparing only the monthly software fee. The processing rate and the contract often cost more.
  • Assuming Clover alone meets Québec's billing rules for restaurants. You need a certified system that connects to WEB-SRM.
  • Fiserv: the company behind Clover and the processing that runs on it.
  • POS system: the software that builds the sale.
  • Payment terminal: the device that reads the card.
  • Smart terminal: a terminal with a screen and apps, like a Clover Flex.
  • Payment processor: the company that moves the money.
  • Merchant account: the account that receives your card sales.

Common questions

Can I use Clover with a different processor in Canada?

No. Clover Canada says Clover devices cannot be used with other payment processors. They work with Fiserv processing.

Does Clover work offline?

Not for cards. Clover devices in Canada cannot take card payments offline. A cellular backup or a second internet line helps keep you open.

Is Clover cheaper if I buy it directly?

Not by default. Clover says contract terms and termination fees vary by provider. Compare the five costs line by line, whoever sells it.
