Already using Authorize.Net? You may not need to replace it
Authorize.Net is the gateway. The merchant account and the processor sit behind it, and they set most of what you pay. Authorize.Net says changing the processor connected to your account "will not impact your web site or API connections/configuration."
So you can keep your checkout and your integration, and review the merchant account behind them.
- Your website or software
- Authorize.Net
- CleverPays sets these upThe processor
- Your merchant account
- Your Canadian bank account
What stays the same, and what to plan:
- Your integration stays. Same Authorize.Net account, same API login and keys, same checkout.
- Saved cards stay in the account. Cards stored as tokens in Authorize.Net's Customer Information Manager (CIM) remain in that account when only the processor changes.
- Refunds on older sales go to the new processor. Authorize.Net says so. Keep the old merchant account open until older refunds and chargebacks are done.
- A reseller may control the change. If a reseller pays for your Authorize.Net account, Authorize.Net refers processor changes to that reseller. We check who owns your account first.
- The switch itself is short. Authorize.Net says a processor update usually takes one to two business days once it has the details.
Why move your Authorize.Net processing to CleverPays
- A lower price, guaranteed. We compare our quote with your current statement on the same volume and card mix. If it is not lower, we tell you in writing and you stay where you are.
- One review of the whole cost. We read your statement with you and show the gateway, interchange, card network fees and markup line by line, with your effective rate.
- The processor follows your setup. We work with more than one processor, so we match the merchant account to how you sell and to the software you use.
- CAD and USD. A Canadian merchant account in Canadian dollars, and a USD account too if you bill American customers.
- American Express included. We can open Amex acceptance on your Authorize.Net account, so you are not managing it separately.
- We do the work. We open the accounts, connect them to your software with you, test a payment, a refund and the first deposit, and stay your contact after launch.
- English and French. One team, both languages.
Authorize.Net processing in CAD
Authorize.Net requires a merchant account from a provider based in Canada or the United States. It lists four processor platforms that settle in Canadian dollars:
| Processor platform | Settles in CAD |
|---|---|
| Chase Paymentech, Tampa platform | Yes |
| Elavon | Yes |
| First Data (Nashville, FDCN, FDMS) | Yes |
| Global Payments North America | Yes |
| CleverPays | Yes, and USD too. We open your merchant account on a platform from this list, add American Express, connect it to Authorize.Net and support it |
The first four rows are Authorize.Net's own list. CleverPays is the provider that sets your account up on one of them.
CAD and USD
Each Authorize.Net account is set to one currency. If you invoice Canadian customers in CAD and American customers in USD, you need two Authorize.Net accounts, each with a merchant account that settles in its currency. We open both, the CAD account and the USD account, and set them up together. Check that your software can send each payment to the right one; each software page covers what its documentation says.
Works with the software you already use
Many business systems come with an Authorize.Net connection built in. Search for yours. Each page shows what the software company documents and what to check. Using something else, such as Shopify, Odoo, NetSuite, Business Central or a custom API connection? Search for it, or tell us what you run and we will read its documentation for you.

Two kinds of Authorize.Net merchant

Online stores and service businesses
Stores on WooCommerce or BigCommerce, and service businesses billing through HighLevel or Checkfront. The jobs are saved cards, recurring billing, payment links and fraud filters. Most of the value is a fair rate and a setup that keeps working.

High-volume and B2B
Distributors, manufacturers and wholesalers billing trade accounts from an ERP or inventory system. The jobs are interchange-plus pricing, business and purchasing cards, Level 2 and Level 3 data, large tickets and several locations or entities. Small percentages add up fast at this volume.
For higher-volume and B2B merchants
Thinking about a surcharge on business card payments? Read the surcharging rules in Canada first. For the full fee picture, see interchange rates in Canada.

Interchange-plus pricing
See interchange, card network fees and the processor's markup as separate lines, so you know which part is negotiable.

Level 2 and Level 3 data
Potentially reduce interchange on commercial cards, where the card, the transaction data, your integration and the processor all qualify. We verify eligibility before we recommend an enhanced-data setup.

Multi-location processing
Structure merchant accounts, gateway accounts, reporting and deposits around your locations or legal entities.

Invoice payments
Payment links, saved cards and recurring billing for trade accounts. Canadian bank payments are a separate service.
Level 2 and Level 3 data: what can qualify
Visa Canada publishes lower interchange for Corporate and Purchasing credit cards when the sale carries more invoice data, or when one sale is very large. Interchange is the fee the card issuer charges on each sale.
| Visa Canada category, Corporate and Purchasing credit | Interchange |
|---|---|
| Standard | 2.00% |
| Electronic | 1.90% |
| Enhanced data, Level 2 | 1.60% |
| Enhanced data, Level 3 | 1.40% |
| Large ticket, one sale of $100,000 to $249,999 | 1.30% |
| Large ticket, one sale of $250,000 or more | 1.00% |
- Standard2.00%
- Electronic1.90%
- Enhanced data, Level 21.60%
- Enhanced data, Level 31.40%
- Large ticket, one sale of $100,000 to $249,9991.30%
- Large ticket, one sale of $250,000 or more1.00%
Qualification depends on the card type, the transaction data, your integration, the processor and current card network rules. Authorize.Net says its hosted forms, payment links and invoices send Level 2 order fields only, and Level 3 line items need an API connection. Its processor table for this feature lists TSYS, and tells merchants on other processors to contact Authorize.Net. You only see the difference on pricing that passes interchange through, such as interchange-plus.
What could better qualification mean for you?
Send us four numbers and a recent statement:
- Your monthly card volume
- Your average sale
- The share of your sales on business or commercial cards
- Your current effective rate, if you know it
We will show where your costs come from and whether enhanced data or a different pricing model is worth a closer look. Our quote comes with the price guarantee: lower than your current statement for the same volume and card mix, or we tell you so in writing.
eCheck is not Canadian pre-authorized debit
Authorize.Net describes its eCheck product as ACH, the US bank network. Canadian business bank debits run under Payments Canada's rules for pre-authorized debit (PAD). If your customers want to pay invoices from a Canadian bank account, that needs a Canadian provider, set up separately.
Where CleverPays fits
Authorize.Net runs the gateway. The processor approves and settles payments. Your software company maintains its own connector. CleverPays does not set interchange or card network rules.
We review your statement, open the Authorize.Net account and the Canadian merchant account behind it, connect it to your software with you, test it and stay your contact after launch.
