The short answer
- Shift4 now owns Bambora. The purchase closed on 2 March 2026. Bambora's old web addresses stop working after 31 December 2026.
- Shift4 says it processes in Canada. Its coverage page lists domestic processing in Canada and the United States, and its status page has Canadian POS and venue components.
- Shift4's own products come with Shift4 processing. Its documentation describes them as end-to-end. That is the vendor's condition, not ours.
- CAD is on the list, but check your platform. Shift4's currency table includes CAD. A Bambora account is set to one currency, CAD or USD.
- No Canadian office or pricing page is published. shift4.com lists one US address and one US price page.
- Nothing changes until it is checked. Whether you can change processor, keep saved cards or keep recurring billing depends on your account, and we confirm it in writing first.
Your gateway and your processor do different jobs
A payment gateway passes the card details from your checkout or terminal to a processor and brings the answer back. The payment processor approves the sale and settles the money into your merchant account, which pays out to your bank.
- Your website, store or billing software
- Shift4, the gateway
- The company that processes your card payments
- Your merchant account
- Your Canadian bank account
With Shift4's own products, the gateway and the processing come from Shift4 together. The Bambora gateway, which Shift4 now owns, can be sold on its own or bundled with processing. Your statement usually shows which you have. If it does not, send us what you have.
Where to start
| Your situation | What we check first |
|---|---|
| Your software or developer asks for Shift4 | Which Shift4 platform it connects to, and what account that platform needs |
| You use Shift4 and want to see what it costs | Which lines are processing, gateway, POS subscription and equipment |
| You want to bill in USD as well as CAD | Which platform you are on, and what currency the account can settle in |
| You take recurring or saved-card payments | Where the cards are stored, and which system runs the schedule |
| You run a restaurant, hotel or venue on Shift4 Dine or Shift4 Venue | What the POS agreement bundles, and whether Interac is set up at the terminal |
| You got an email about new Bambora addresses | Who built your connection, so you know who has to update it |
Bambora is now part of Shift4
Shift4 completed its purchase of Bambora North America on 2 March 2026. Bambora's help centre, now titled Shift4 North America Support, says its API and checkout addresses moved to Shift4 addresses on 25 August 2026, and that the old Bambora and Beanstream addresses are permanently disabled after 31 December 2026. Ask your developer or plugin vendor to confirm the update. If you are not sure what you run, we can check your setup with you. Read the Bambora guide.
Software that connects to Shift4
Shift4 runs two developer platforms. dev.shift4.com is the Shift4 Gateway, with hosted checkout, payment links, subscriptions and plugins. docs.shift4.com is the Shift4 Payment Platform API, built around its Universal Transaction Gateway. Check which one your software uses.
WooCommerce
Shift4 publishes "Shift4 for WooCommerce" on dev.shift4.com and maintains the code on GitHub. Per Shift4's documentation it supports saved cards for logged-in customers, 3-D Secure 2 in disabled, frictionless or strict mode, Apple Pay on request, full and partial refunds, and authorise-only capture. It works with the classic checkout; block checkout is listed as coming soon. See our WooCommerce connector page for what a connector check covers.
Salesforce B2C Commerce Cloud
Shift4 documents a cartridge for Salesforce B2C Commerce Cloud with card vaulting and Apple Pay, on a dev.shift4.com account. Shift4 lists no connector for NetSuite, QuickBooks Online, Shopify, Adobe Commerce or BigCommerce on its own sites.
Hosted checkout, payment links and custom builds
dev.shift4.com documents a hosted Checkout page, Components for card fields on your own page, and Payment Links for single payments, subscriptions and donations. docs.shift4.com documents i4Go, which keeps card data off your web server, and 4Res for hotel reservations. Our development team can scope a custom build around your payment flow.
Restaurant and venue POS
Shift4 Dine is the current name of its restaurant POS, formerly SkyTab. Shift4 Venue covers stadiums and arenas. Shift4's status page lists "Shift4 Dine POS - Canada" and "Shift4 Venue Payments (Canada)", and the Ottawa Senators chose Shift4 for food and drink sales at Canadian Tire Centre in November 2025. Shift4's POS pages describe built-in payment acceptance, so expect the processing to come with the POS.
What to check on a Shift4 account
| Feature | What the vendor documents |
|---|---|
| Saved cards | dev.shift4.com: one-time card tokens expire after 24 hours; store a card by creating a customer. docs.shift4.com: i4Go and 4Res tokenization. |
| Recurring billing | dev.shift4.com: plans, subscriptions and webhooks. docs.shift4.com: a card-on-file guide. |
| 3-D Secure | dev.shift4.com: 3-D Secure 2 test cards and 3DS rules. docs.shift4.com: a standalone 3-D Secure flow with frictionless and challenge responses. |
| Level 2 data | docs.shift4.com: Level 2 purchasing card data, recommended for all certifications. Level 3 is not documented. |
| Apple Pay and Google Pay | Apple Pay in the WooCommerce plugin and the Salesforce cartridge, enabled by Shift4 on request. Google Pay is not listed for either. |
| Hosted page or fields | dev.shift4.com: Checkout and Components. docs.shift4.com: Hosted Checkout and Payment Component, renamed on 22 September 2026. |
| Pay by link | dev.shift4.com: Payment Links with expiry and usage limits. See our pay by link page. |
| Surcharging | docs.shift4.com: a surcharging guide with a rule check before the sale. Québec consumer law bans card fees on consumer payments; check with your lawyer. |
| Bank debit | docs.shift4.com: ACH for US bank accounts only. Canadian pre-authorized debit is not documented on Shift4's own platform. |
| Not documented | A virtual terminal for keyed payments on Shift4's own platform, Interac at the terminal, and incremental authorization for hotels. Ask Shift4 in writing. Bambora's Web Terminal is covered on the Bambora page. |
3-D Secure 2 on Shift4
Shift4's own gateway documents 3-D Secure 2 with disabled, frictionless and strict modes, 3DS rules in its fraud tools, and 3DS test cards for Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, JCB and Diners Club. The Shift4 WooCommerce plugin exposes the same three modes. If your account is on the Bambora gateway instead, read 3-D Secure on Bambora: there it is limited to some processors and must be enrolled by support. We check which platform you are on and which mode is set. Why it matters: card-testing bots run stolen card numbers through online checkouts by the thousand, and Visa's guidance says every attempt, approved or declined, can carry authorization and gateway fees, with disputes on the ones that go through. Visa's merchant guide lists 3-D Secure authentication among the controls, next to CAPTCHA, velocity limits and device checks. Turn it on before the first attack; we check that it is live and that your checkout sends it. See 3-D Secure in Canada, or the sixty-second version.
Stopping card testing on Shift4
Shift4's gateway documentation has a fraud prevention section with lists (block or allow cards, emails and IPs), rules (3DS rules, approve rules, decline rules) and verification checks (AVS, ANI and CVC). It also forwards fraud warnings from Visa TC40 and Mastercard SAFE reports and supports Verifi Rapid Dispute Resolution. All of it is set in the Shift4 dashboard, not in the plugin. We check which rules exist on your account and whether your WooCommerce plugin or custom build sends the IP and address the checks need. Visa's merchant guide lists these controls together with 3-D Secure, and none of them is on by default on a new account. We go through the list with you and turn on what your checkout can use.
CAD, USD and Interac
Shift4's currency table on docs.shift4.com lists the Canadian dollar. dev.shift4.com says it supports over 160 currencies, but it does not say which currency a Canadian account settles in. A Bambora account is set to one currency, CAD or USD, and a second currency needs a second account. Interac Online is mentioned only in Bambora's help centre; Shift4's own documentation does not mention Interac debit. Before any change, we confirm in writing which currency your account settles in, whether a USD account is possible, and how Interac is handled at your terminal or checkout.
Fees and statements
Shift4 publishes no rate card for Canada. Its Shift4 Dine pricing page speaks of a monthly POS fee, additional fees and charges, processing rates and an Advantage Program that offsets processing fees, with terms that apply to new customers. Its legal page lists the agreements that carry fee terms: merchant processing terms, a gateway services agreement, the Shift4 Dine POS service agreement, equipment programs, and a dynamic currency conversion addendum. A Bambora invoice names a monthly account charge, a per-transaction gateway fee, declined transaction fees and chargeback fees.
Ask for every fee type in writing before you sign: processing, gateway, POS subscription, equipment, PCI and chargeback. Then read the result against our guides to card processing fees in Canada and interchange rates in Canada.
Where CleverPays fits
Shift4 owns and runs its gateway, its POS and the Bambora gateway. The company that processes your card payments approves and settles them. Your software company maintains its own connector. Visa, Mastercard, Interac and the other networks set their own rules. CleverPays does not make Shift4 or your software.
We check your setup with you: which Shift4 platform, which processor, which software, CAD or USD, saved cards and recurring billing. Then we tell you what can change. Where we can set up the account, we will say so in writing. Where we cannot, we will tell you. We can review your statement, connect and test what we set up, and stay your contact in English and French.
