The Clover payment gateway in Canada: what you have, and what to check before you change it.

Clover is owned by Fiserv. Its payment gateway takes card payments online, by link, by invoice or by keyed entry. If you run Clover devices, the gateway adds online sales to the same account and dashboard. If you have no device, Clover documents online and phone payments without one. Either way, we check the whole setup first: the account, the processor behind it, the software, the currency, saved cards and recurring billing.

The short answer

  • "Clover Gateway" is not one product. It can mean Clover Ecommerce, a legacy Payeezy account moved onto Clover in March 2024, or a third-party WordPress plugin.
  • It runs on a Clover merchant account. Clover's plugin pages say payments go through the merchant's Clover account, under that account agreement.
  • One currency per account. Clover's Canada docs say a merchant processes in either CAD or USD. Interac is documented on devices only.
  • Nothing changes until it is checked. It depends on your account, and we confirm it in writing first.

What people mean by "Clover Gateway"

Clover Ecommerce

Clover's name for the online side: Hosted Checkout, the Clover iframe, the Ecommerce API and free plugins for WooCommerce, Shopify and Adobe Commerce. Clover's docs say it connects a store to "the Clover payment gateway".

Legacy Payeezy and Global Gateway e4

Payeezy accounts, also called Global Gateway or GGe4, were moved onto Clover Payments in March 2024. The "Clover gateway login" is now clover.com/dashboard/login.

Third-party WordPress plugins

WeeConnectPay and Zaytech publish WooCommerce plugins with "Clover Payment Gateway" in the name. They are not Clover's own plugin.

Your gateway and your processor do different jobs

A payment gateway passes the card details from your checkout to a processor and brings the answer back. The payment processor approves the sale and settles the money into your merchant account, which pays out to your bank. See all the gateways we cover.

  1. Your website, store or billing software
  2. Clover, the gateway
  3. The company that processes your card payments
  4. Your merchant account
  5. Your Canadian bank account

Clover documents its gateway as part of a Clover merchant account, not sold on its own. Its Canadian FAQ lists the question "Can I use Clover with my existing merchant services account?". We check that answer for you before anything changes.

Where to start

Your situationWhat we check first
Your software asks for CloverWhich Clover product it connects to: a plugin, Hosted Checkout or the iframe
You use Clover and want to see what it costsWhich lines are software, online processing, keyed-in payments and apps
You want to settle in USDWhether your account is CAD or USD, and whether a second account is needed
You take recurring paymentsWhere cards are stored, and which system runs the schedule
You had a Payeezy or Global Gateway accountWhether your recurring plans and fee settings came across in March 2024

Payeezy moved to Clover in March 2024

Clover's Payeezy migration page says those accounts were browned out on 1 March 2024 and disabled on 26 March 2024. Migrated recurring plans support USD only, and fee settings were not carried over. The Payeezy plugin for Shopify was retired on 1 May 2025.

If you were on Payeezy, ask your developer or plugin vendor to confirm the move is complete. If you are not sure what you run, we can check your setup with you.

Software that connects to Clover

Clover says its plugins let merchants in the United States and Canada take payments with no coding.

WooCommerce

Clover Payments for WooCommerce is free. Per Clover's documentation it authorizes, captures, refunds and voids, adds a "Pay Now" email link, and supports Apple Pay and Canadian French. WordPress.org shows a 1.7 out of 5 rating from 16 reviews. Saved cards and subscriptions are not on its feature list; WeeConnectPay's third-party plugin lists WooCommerce Subscriptions, Google Pay and 3-D Secure. Our WooCommerce connector page shows what we check on a plugin.

Shopify

The Clover Payments plugin installs from Shopify's third-party payment providers list. Per Clover's documentation it supports CAD and USD, English and French, refunds, voids, MOTO, Apple Pay and Google Pay. A surcharge-enabled Clover account cannot connect. Each shop is tied to one currency.

Adobe Commerce, your own site or app

Clover's free Adobe Commerce extension covers the US and Canada, with Canadian French. For other sites, Hosted Checkout sends the customer to a Clover-hosted page, and the Clover iframe embeds the card form in yours. Our development team can scope either.

3-D Secure 2 on Clover

Clover runs 3DS2 per merchant account, switched on in the Merchant Dashboard under Settings, Ecommerce, Fraud Tools, with a per-transaction charge from the 3DS provider. Clover's docs call it optional in North America. It is automatic on Hosted Checkout, payment links, invoices and Online Ordering; an iframe or API build needs SDK work, and Mastercard needs a registration step through your Clover reseller. The third-party WooCommerce plugin uses it only once it is on in the account. We check whether it is on and which checkout you run. Why it matters: card-testing bots run stolen card numbers through online checkouts by the thousand, and Visa's guidance says every attempt, approved or declined, can carry authorization and gateway fees, with disputes on the ones that go through. Visa's merchant guide lists 3-D Secure authentication among the controls, next to CAPTCHA, velocity limits and device checks. Turn it on before the first attack; we check that it is live and that your checkout sends it. See 3-D Secure in Canada, or the sixty-second version.

Stopping card testing on Clover

Clover publishes a guide on protecting ecommerce merchants from card-testing fraud. Its tools are AVS and CVV checks returned on each charge, reCAPTCHA on Hosted Checkout and the iframe, 3DS from the Merchant Dashboard, and fraud tools on the Shopify app. An API build has to act on the AVS and CVV results itself; the hosted pages do it for you. We check which checkout you run and whether reCAPTCHA and the checks are switched on. Visa's merchant guide lists these controls together with 3-D Secure, and none of them is on by default on a new account. We go through the list with you and turn on what your checkout can use.

CAD, USD and Interac

Clover's Canada documentation says a merchant processes in either CAD or USD, one currency per account. The Ecommerce API also documents Multi Currency Pricing: a charge in another currency, Visa and Mastercard only, settled in USD. If you want both CAD and USD online, we confirm in writing whether that means two accounts.

Interac debit is documented on Clover devices and the Clover Go app, for CAD accounts only. Clover does not document Interac on Hosted Checkout, the iframe, the API or the plugins.

Fees and statements

Clover Canada publishes no rate card. The fee types it names are a software plan, a keyed-in rate for Virtual Terminal, card-not-present processing, a per-transaction 3-D Secure fee and App Market subscriptions. The plugins are free, and transactions are charged under your Clover account agreement. For how card fees are built, read card processing fees in Canada and interchange rates in Canada.

Where CleverPays fits

Clover owns and runs the gateway, the dashboard and its plugins. Third-party plugin authors own their connectors. The company that processes your card payments approves and settles them. Visa, Mastercard and Interac set their own rules.

We can set up a Clover account, or add the online side to the Clover account behind your devices. We can review your statement, check which Clover product your software needs, connect and test it with you, and stay your contact in English and French. Currency, saved cards and recurring billing are confirmed in writing before anything changes. Where we can set up the account, we will say so in writing. Where we cannot, we will tell you.
