Compare payment gateways in Canada: what each one documents, side by side.

This table compares eight payment gateways used in Canada. It shows what each vendor documents: Canadian dollars, US dollars, Interac, saved cards, recurring billing, 3-D Secure, hosted pages, virtual terminals and software connectors. It does not compare prices. It does not rank. Each gateway has its own hub under payment gateways in Canada. Nothing on your account changes until we check it with you.

How to read this table

  • "Yes" means documented. The vendor's own page, or a software vendor's own page, says the feature exists. We did not test it.
  • "Not listed" is not "no". It means no page we read covers it. Ask the vendor, or ask us to check.
  • Currency rules are per account. Several gateways set one currency per account. What your account can do is confirmed in writing, not read from a table.
  • The processor is a separate choice. A gateway carries the sale. The company that processes your card payments approves and settles it. Some gateways publish their own processor list; see the gateway's own list.

By gateway

Authorize.Net

Authorize.Net is a gateway in the Visa Acceptance Solutions family. Each account is set to one currency, so CAD and USD need two accounts. Check first who owns the account: if a reseller pays for it, the reseller handles processor changes. Authorize.Net in Canada.

NMI

NMI is a gateway owned by Network Merchants, LLC, backed by three private equity firms. It documents USD and CAD "based upon payment processor" and several MIDs on one account. Check first which processor sits on your NMI account and which currencies that processor record carries. NMI in Canada.

Bambora

Bambora North America, formerly Beanstream, has been part of Shift4 since 2 March 2026. Each account is CAD or USD. Check first whether your integration has moved to the new Shift4 addresses before 31 December 2026. Bambora in Canada.

Moneris Gateway

Moneris Gateway is the online gateway of Moneris Solutions Corp., a joint venture of RBC and BMO. Francisco Partners agreed to buy Moneris on 10 August 2026. It is sold for Canadian businesses and settles in CAD. Check first which Moneris product your software uses: Moneris Checkout, Moneris API or the Classic API. Moneris Gateway in Canada.

Clover Gateway

What merchants call the Clover Gateway is the Clover payment gateway behind Clover Ecommerce, a Fiserv product. Merchants process in USD or CAD, one currency per account, and Interac is documented for devices only. Check first whether you are a former Payeezy account; those moved to Clover in March 2024. Clover Gateway in Canada.

Shift4

Shift4 Payments runs two developer platforms under its own name plus the Bambora gateway. Its own gateway documents saved cards, subscriptions, 3-D Secure and payment links, but CAD settlement for a Canadian merchant is not stated. Check first which of the three platforms your software connects to. Shift4 in Canada.

Cybersource

Cybersource is Visa's enterprise gateway. It holds no merchant accounts, so the acquirer behind it sets your currency. Check first whether you still run Secure Acceptance; its migration deadline was 30 September 2026. Cybersource in Canada.

Windcave

Windcave is a New Zealand gateway and acquirer that launched Canadian merchant services in 2021 through Windcave Canada Limited. Its plugins list Interac, but its Canada terms exclude Interac transactions. Check first what the terms for your account say. Windcave in Canada.

Where CleverPays fits

Each gateway company owns its gateway. Your software company maintains its connector. The company that processes your card payments approves and settles them. CleverPays makes none of these.

We can read your statement and name the gateway you have. We can check the setup against this table and say in writing what can change and what cannot. We can connect and test with you, and stay your contact in English and French. Where we can set up the account, we will say so in writing. Where we cannot, we will tell you.

Common questions

Both have a WooCommerce plugin. The Moneris extension is a paid third-party plugin that documents saved cards, WooCommerce Subscriptions, and CAD and USD. Clover's own free plugin documents Apple Pay and a Pay Now link. It does not list saved cards or subscriptions; a third-party Clover plugin adds both subscriptions and 3-D Secure. Which fits depends on three things: whether you need subscriptions, which currency you settle in, and which account you already hold.
