The short answer
- Moneris Gateway is a family of products. Moneris Checkout, Moneris API, the Classic API, Hosted Tokenization and the Virtual Terminal sit under it, run from the Merchant Resource Center, with statements in the Moneris Portal. Moneris Online, a Wix website product, is separate.
- Ownership is changing. Moneris announced its sale to Francisco Partners on 10 August 2026, expected to close by the end of BMO and RBC fiscal Q1 2027, subject to approvals.
- It settles in CAD. The multi-currency option shows foreign prices but settles in Canadian dollars.
- The gateway and the processor are different jobs. Moneris says live access needs a Moneris merchant account, so the two usually come together.
- Nothing changes until it is checked. Changing processor or keeping saved cards and recurring billing depends on your account. We confirm it in writing first.
Your gateway and your processor do different jobs
A payment gateway passes the card details from your checkout to a processor and brings the answer back. The payment processor approves the sale and settles the money into your merchant account, which pays out to your bank.
- Your website, store or billing software
- Moneris Gateway, the gateway (Moneris Checkout, Moneris API or the Virtual Terminal)
- The company that processes your card payments
- Your merchant account
- Your Canadian bank account
Moneris's developer guide ties live access to a Moneris merchant account, so the two normally come as one bundle. If you are not sure what you have, send us your statement and we will work it out with you.
Where to start
| Your situation | What we check first |
|---|---|
| Your software asks for Moneris Gateway | Which Moneris product it connects to |
| You use Moneris Gateway and want to see what it costs | Which lines are processing, add-ons and software |
| You want to bill in USD | Whether your account settles in USD or only shows prices in it |
| You take recurring payments | Where the cards are stored and which system runs the schedule |
| You are moving website platform | Whether the new platform has a Moneris connector |
The Francisco Partners sale, announced 10 August 2026
On 10 August 2026 Moneris announced that Francisco Partners agreed to buy it from BMO and RBC for about C$2.0 billion in cash. Moneris says the deal needs approval under the Retail Payment Activities Act and the Competition Act, and should close by the end of the first quarter of BMO and RBC's fiscal 2027.
Moneris has announced no product or contract changes tied to the sale. If you get a notice from your plugin vendor or developer, ask them what it means; if you are not sure what you run, we can check your setup with you.
Software that connects to Moneris Gateway
Check each connection against the jobs you need it to do. Our e-commerce page explains what a connector covers.
WooCommerce
WooCommerce.com sells "Moneris Gateway for WooCommerce", built by SkyVerge. Per the listing, it uses Moneris Checkout, supports WooCommerce Subscriptions and Pre-Orders, and saves cards once tokenization is on. It is for Canada only; CAD and USD each need their own merchant account.
Shopify
Moneris publishes a "Moneris" app in the Shopify App Store. Per Moneris's support article, it needs your Store ID and API token, and the old integration stopped on 5 June 2025. The listing names CVV and AVS only, so confirm saved cards, subscriptions and wallets before you rely on them.
Other software
Moneris lists Magento 2.x and Ecwid as featured plug-ins for Moneris Checkout, and a plug-in for Salesforce B2C Commerce. Its QuickBooks Connector syncs sales into QuickBooks Online but does not take payments. Moneris names no NetSuite connector.
What to check on a Moneris Gateway account
| Feature | What the vendor documents |
|---|---|
| Saved cards | Moneris Vault card profiles; a "Tokenize Card" option in Moneris Checkout |
| Recurring billing | Subscriptions in Moneris API; a Recur object in the Classic API |
| 3-D Secure | 3-D Secure 2.2 for Visa, Mastercard and Amex, turned on by Moneris Sales Support |
| Level 2 and 3 data | Classic API and the Merchant Resource Center |
| Apple Pay and Google Pay | Listed on the Moneris Gateway page |
| Hosted page or fields | Moneris Checkout embeds a Moneris-hosted form; Hosted Tokenization gives one card-field iframe. The Hosted Pay Page retired on 9 September 2024; Moneris Checkout replaced it |
| Virtual terminal | Keyed mail and phone orders, refunds and batch files in the Merchant Resource Center |
| Pay by link and pre-authorized debit | Not documented by Moneris |
3-D Secure 2 on Moneris Gateway
Moneris Gateway runs 3-D Secure 2.2 through the Moneris 3DS Server for Visa Secure, Mastercard Identity Check and Amex SafeKey, and Amex needs an Amex merchant account on the Moneris side. Moneris turns it on when you call Moneris Sales Support; it is not a switch in the portal. Moneris's pricing page lists 3DS among its priced fraud tools, and Chargebee's deprecated Moneris connection has no 3DS at all. We check whether it is active on your store and which of your checkouts send the authentication. Why it matters: card-testing bots run stolen card numbers through online checkouts by the thousand, and Visa's guidance says every attempt, approved or declined, can carry authorization and gateway fees, with disputes on the ones that go through. Visa's merchant guide lists 3-D Secure authentication among the controls, next to CAPTCHA, velocity limits and device checks. Turn it on before the first attack; we check that it is live and that your checkout sends it. See 3-D Secure in Canada, or the sixty-second version.
Stopping card testing on Moneris Gateway
Moneris's developer documentation lists Kount Essential and Kount Enterprise for scoring, AVS and CVD checks, minimum and maximum transaction limits, auto-decision rules in Moneris Checkout, and a Transaction Risk Management Tool that Moneris marks as Canada only. Kount is a priced add-on; the limits and the AVS and CVD checks are settings. We check which are on, and whether your checkout sends the address and the three-digit code the checks rely on. Visa's merchant guide lists these controls together with 3-D Secure, and none of them is on by default on a new account. We go through the list with you and turn on what your checkout can use.
CAD, USD and Interac
Moneris documents settlement and reporting in Canadian dollars. Multi-Currency Pricing shows prices in over 140 foreign currencies, but the money settles in CAD. No Moneris page we read documents a USD-settled account; the WooCommerce listing says each currency needs its own merchant account. If you need USD, we confirm in writing what your account can do first.
For Interac Debit online, Moneris documents Interac Debit through Apple Pay and Google Pay, and Konek pay-by-bank from Interac, added to Moneris Checkout and Moneris API in June 2026. Interac Online is no longer in its developer documentation, and pre-authorized debit is not documented.
Fees and statements
Moneris's pricing page names two models, Flat Rate Pricing and Simplified Pricing. Simplified Pricing lists interchange, a network assessment fee and a transaction fee. The page also names card brand fees, a foreign card fee, priced fraud tools (Kount, 3DS, tokenization) and incidental fees such as a chargeback fee. It names no gateway monthly, setup or per-transaction gateway fee, so the gateway cost sits inside the processing lines and the add-ons. We separate them for you. See card processing fees in Canada and interchange rates in Canada.
Where CleverPays fits
Moneris owns and runs Moneris Gateway. The company that processes your card payments approves and settles them. Your software company maintains its own connector, and the card networks set their own rules. CleverPays does not make Moneris Gateway or your software.
We check your setup with you: which gateway product, which processor, which software, CAD or USD, saved cards and recurring billing. Then we tell you what can change. Where we can set up the account, we will say so in writing; where we cannot, we will tell you. We can review your statement, connect and test what we set up, and stay your contact in English and French.
