The short answer
- LOC is your POS and your payment link. The software rings up the sale, sends the amount to the PIN pad or the pump, and records the result.
- LOC SMS is now ThriVersA. LOC renamed its product line in 2024. A site set up before then may still run an SMS version, so the version matters.
- LOC sells only through certified resellers. Your LOC dealer installs it, sets up payments and supports you.
- The fuel module is for unbranded fuel. LOC aims ThriVersA Fuel at convenience stores and other fuel retailers that do not fly a fuel brand.
- A processor change depends on your setup. LOC offers fully integrated and semi-integrated payments, but it publishes no list of the processors it works with in Canada. That has to be checked for your version and devices.
What LOC Software does
LOC sends each card sale to the device that reads the card and records the approval against the sale, so the counter, the pumps and the books agree.
- The counter or the pump
- LOC SMS or ThriVersA
- The PIN pad or the pump card reader
- The processor
- Your bank account
The cashier or driver starts the sale, LOC sends the amount to the device, the card is read and sent to the processor for approval, and the processor settles the money to your bank account.
At a fuel site, ThriVersA Fuel adds the forecourt. LOC says it is certified with leading fuel controllers and tank gauges and works with pay-at-the-pump devices. LOC says in-store sales can be paid at the pump, and one balancing report covers fuel and store.
Terminals it runs on
LOC publishes no device list, so this table shows what LOC says it works with, plus one pump reader common in Canadian dispensers; your dealer confirms the exact models.
| Device | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ingenico PIN pads | Counter PIN pad | LOC lists Ingenico among its hardware partners. It does not publish model numbers |
| Pay-at-the-pump readers | Card reader in the dispenser | LOC says ThriVersA Fuel works with pay-at-the-pump devices. It names no brands |
| Gilbarco SPOT M7 | Card reader in Gilbarco dispensers | Part of Gilbarco's FlexPay IV CRIND. Measurement Canada lists an M7 outdoor payment terminal as an option on Encore dispensers. LOC does not name it |
| Fuel controllers and tank gauges | Forecourt equipment, not payment | LOC says it is certified with leading models. It names no brands |
| POS terminals, tablets and kiosks | Counter hardware | ThriVersA runs in a web browser. LOC lists Toshiba, HP and Zebra among its partners |
What it handles
LOC's public pages cover tap, wallets, gift cards, loyalty and offline sales, but they say nothing about Interac by name, cashback, fleet cards or fuel pre-authorization.
| Feature | What LOC's public pages say |
|---|---|
| Cards and wallets | Contactless cards and mobile wallets, with more than one tender in a sale |
| Debit | Credit and debit sales are reconciled at the pump and in store. Interac and cashback are not named |
| Gift cards and loyalty | Gift cards and loyalty through LOC's own module or a web service link, with store gift card balances across the chain and rewards at the pump |
| Offline sales | Store and forward processing for sales taken while offline |
| Refunds | Refunds from any store, with the original sale looked up and no second refund on one receipt |
| Pump pricing | Different prices by payment type at the pump, such as cash and credit |
| Fleet cards | Not described |
| Pre-authorization at the pump | Not described |
| Security | LOC says its POS is PCI-certified and meets Visa security standards. No PCI listing is named |
Who uses it
LOC builds for independent retailers with high volume: grocers, natural food stores, convenience stores, pharmacies and specialty shops. Its French company brochure says more than 10,000 LOC systems run every day. The fuel module is for convenience stores and other unbranded fuel sites that want fuel and store sales in one system.
LOC sells only through certified, authorized POS resellers, who supply the hardware, install the software and handle custom work. Your dealer is usually the first call for anything about payments.
LOC has used add-on payment software before. In January 2018, LOC and Index, a San Francisco company, announced a semi-integrated payment module for LOC SMS that ran on Verifone and Ingenico PIN pads. With both fully integrated and semi-integrated options, two LOC sites can connect to payments in different ways.
Keeping your POS when you change processors
Keeping LOC and changing who processes your cards can be possible, because LOC offers more than one way to connect payments. In a semi-integrated setup, the PIN pad talks to the processor and LOC only sends the amount and records the result. In a fully integrated setup, LOC's own software carries the payment, and the processor must be certified with it.
For a change to work, all of this has to be true:
- Your LOC version supports the new link. SMS and ThriVersA are different releases, and older SMS versions may not have it.
- The new processor is certified with LOC for your setup. That covers the counter and the pumps. LOC publishes no list, so your dealer and the processor confirm it.
- A new merchant account is opened. Your old merchant account and its merchant ID do not move.
- Your devices are re-keyed or replaced. A PIN pad or pump reader keyed for one processor may need new keys or a swap. Pump readers sit inside the dispenser, so your fuel service company may be involved.
- Your LOC dealer does the work. Plan the date with them.
Nobody can promise the result before these are checked.
What to check before a change
Your exact version
Ask your dealer for the version shown in the POS and the back office. LOC's history runs from SMS V3 to V3.4, then eSuite, then ThriVersA. A processor certifies a specific version.
Your counter and pump devices
List the PIN pad model at each lane and the card reader in each dispenser. PCI SSC lists the Gilbarco SPOT M7 approvals with an expiry date of 30 April 2027, so ask your service company what that means for your pumps.
Gift cards and loyalty
Find out whether your gift cards and loyalty run in LOC's own module or through an outside program. An outside program has its own link, and it may not follow you to a new processor.
Offline sales and refunds
Ask how store and forward is set up, and what happens to sales stored offline on the day of the switch. Refunds on old sales may still need the old account, so keep it open for a while.
Who supports you after
Write down who to call for each part: your LOC dealer for the software, the processor for approvals and deposits, and your fuel service company for the pumps.
Where CleverPays fits
LOC builds the software. Your LOC dealer installs it and sets up payments. Your fuel service company looks after the pumps. The processor approves and settles each card payment. CleverPays makes none of it.
We read your setup and name each part: the POS, its version, the payment link, the PIN pads, the pump readers and the processor. Then we tell you in writing whether a change is possible and what it would affect, before anything moves.
