The short answer

Void, refund, manual refund or pre-authorization? This explainer shows what each one means on Clover and where to find them on the web dashboard, plus the Cash log for drawer activity.

In this video

Step by step

1. Five tabs, five kinds of activity

Payments, Refunds, Manual Refunds, Voids and Authorizations each have their own list and totals.

2. A void cancels before settlement

A void stops a payment from going through, usually on the same day before the batch closes. The customer is never charged.

3. A refund sends money back

A refund returns money on a payment that already went through. A manual refund is one not linked to an original payment.

4. Authorizations hold an amount

A pre-authorization holds funds on a card, common for tabs, rentals and tips. It only becomes a sale once you capture it.

5. Cash log tracks the drawer

Cash received, payouts, change given and any discrepancies are recorded in Sales activity, then Cash log.

How we made this video

We recorded this on CleverPays' own Clover web dashboard at clover.com on 6 November 2026, view only: no sales, refunds or saved settings. Customer and employee names are blurred. Your dashboard can look a little different, depending on your plan and apps.
